View Full Version : Sending a file or photo.

Can anyone please help me with this one?, it's driving me
crazy!
I have just purchased a router for home use, and I am no
longer able to 'Send a file or photo' via Windows
messenger (XP Pro) as the port that Windows Messenger
uses to 'Send a file or photo' is blocked by the router.
The router however does have an option to 'forward'
specified ports.
Does any one know which port Windows Messenger uses
to 'Send a file or photo' so that I can make this active,
or does anyone else have any other solutions?
Many thanks for your help in advance.

Greetings Mark,
You can forward every port in your router and this still won't work. In order to send files
through your router the router must either support built-in support for Messenger (in which
case forwarding the ports may allow you to send files, the ports being 6891 through 6900 TCP)
or support Universal Plug and Play (UPnP). In order to make use
of UPnP enabled file transfer, you will also need to use MSN Messenger 5 or 6:
http://messenger.msn.com/download/download.asp?client=1 (5)
http://messenger.msn.com/download/v6preview.asp?client=1 (6)
A number of routers now support UPnP, you may just need a firmware update from your router
manufacturer to add support to your router. If you can't figure out if your router supports
UPnP or not, just reply back with your router brand and model and we can tell you.

Hi Mark,
All you need is the latest firmware update from Linksys here:
http://www.linksys.com/download
After installing, go into the routers configuration, Password tab, and toggle UPnP on. Then
reboot, use MSN Messenger 5 or 6, and you should be able to send files to anyone.

Hi Jonathan,
Thanks again for your advice, I downloaded the latest
firmware for the router and thats working just fine, I
also downloaded MSN Messenger V6 and for some reason I am
still unable to send files.
Any ideas?, do i have to configure MSN Messenger perhaps
to tell it that i am using a router?
Thanks again,
Mark

Hi Mark,
No, you don't need to configure anything. You might want to check to make sure that the
Internet Connection Firewall in Windows XP hasn't come on -- To do so, click Start, then
click the Control Panel. If you're in category view click Network and Internet connections
then click Network Connections. Right click the network/internet connection, then click
Properties. Click the Advanced Tab, and verify that the Internet Connection Firewall is
unchecked.
