to solve the same problem. I disconnected everything
except monitor, keyboard and mouse turned off the
computer and changed the outlet for the power cord and
this resolved the problem.

I bet it was changing the power cord outlet that fixed it!

Hard to say what could have occurred here without more info. If this occurs
again (I assume this went away after a reboot?), open the Task Manager
(either right click on the application bar and choose "Task Manager" from
the menu or CTL-ALT-DEL and choose Task Manager from the security dialog)
click on the "Processes" tab and see which process is eating up all your
CPU. Something probably got kicked off that was really hitting your CPU
hard. If you can identify that, then that'll go a long way in determining
what your problem was.
