View Full Version : Sysprep Question
VMS Tech
December 27th 03, 12:31 PM
I'm playing around with sysprep on a test XP Pro system, and I found out
that after using "factory mode" then "reseal" it erased my "registered to:"
field in my System Properties. I had information in there prior to testing,
what can I do to fix/prevent this from happening in the future?
Thanks

Hi
'Playing around' with Sysprep is OK, but... Your posting has answered =
your own Q. "Factory Mode" & "Registered to;". 'Reseal' doesn't do all =
that it is purported to do. You really need to use the guidelines for =
using Sysprep if you are going to install onto a large number of PCs. =
How many PCs are going to install onto 100, 200+?

It's been a long time since I did Sysprep on XP. But if I remembered
correctly, I think I selected mini setup for it to stick.

My Goal is..
5 computers that are 100% the same hardware/software. I want to make a
master system, get everything tested and working, then ghost the image onto
the 4 other systems. I have 5 XP Pro OEM keys, and each computer needs to
have it's own key. I was told "sysprep" could take came of this for me. All
the computers are also for the same company.
I Hope this fills in some blanks.
Thanks

I don't have a volume license for the 5 computers I have OEM licenses to
work with. I just need to know an easy way I can get ALL systems running
with differant OEM keys.
I want to make an image of one system and ghost the rest. I want to get one
of the computers installed and working the way I want, and then just ghost
the image onto the last 4 systems. This will save me tons of time.
Is there ANY way I can do this???
Thanks,

Are you sure about that? I have used OEM with sysprep before. As long as
you set it up to prompt you for the key, it should be OK. As a matter of
fact, I kept a copy of sysprep.inf file for both OEM and VLK. For VLK, I
have Product ID spelled out under [User Data] so it dont't prompt me for a
key. For OEM, it's blank.

The idea of Sysprep is to pre-install the OS. If you're an OEM, you would
set it up so that the end user will have to type the key and activate XP.
You would also set it up so that they can have the option to type the name
of the registered user.

It might be easiest for you to ghost, then re-activate each one.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Cu rrent Version\WPAEvents
"OOBETimer "
Change at least one digit of this value to deactivate Windows.
Start/Run, type:
%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a
Click Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to activate
Windows, and then click Next.
Click Change Product key.
Type the new product key in the New key boxes, and then click Update.
If you are returned to the previous window, click Remind me later.
Start/Run, type:
%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a
Activate online.

Hi Mark
Activate each installation as you say. I didn't think that is was =
possible to use Sysprep with OEM CDs - at least I've never been able to =
it. Several people have bought OEM CDs to the day/evening classes that =
I tutor, but I have tried Sysprep with those OEM CDs - it doesn't work =
- or at least I can't get it to work.

It's possible I am missing the point. Ghosting is different from Sysprep.

Mark, my understanding of Sysprep - and the one that I tutor on - is =
that it can be used to deploy XP to X number of PCs - with the =
appropriately acquired and paid for licenses. You can use a 'Ghosting' =
program initially, yes, but Sysprep is used to actually 'deploy' XP over =
X number of PCs using a 'Unattended install'. If you feel that I have =
got this wrong, please correct me. I wouldn't want to retract all the =
info - that has so far worked for all my students - and them have to =
start from scratch.
