You can only do an upgrade if you start the process from
the OS you're trying to upgrade.
You have a couple options.
If you can, you can put the drive back in the old
machine, boot up 2000 Pro. Insert the XP CD, and start
the upgrade. When the machine reboots, turn off the
power, move the drive back to the new machine, and let
the XP install finish.
If you can't do that, boot from your 2000 Pro CD and
choose to repair the existing installation. After the
install is repaired, upgrade to XP (remember, you have to
be booted into 2000 Pro to do that).
