Ok this message is a little long so bear with me.

I have DSL and a LinkSys router so my son
can share the DSL and also we are networked
together so we can copy files to each others computer etc.

I can't get Messenger to send files but I can recieve.
I downloaded the latest Linksys update with UPnP
feature. But when I enable it my whole network
setup changes. A new icon pops up in both of
our computers Network Connections folder for
an internet sharing connection. We only had one
icon connectione before. The problem is that
now my computer network setup changes into
a "Another computer shares this computers Internet
connection."!! We both go into the back of the router
and do not need for his computer to go through my computer
to share the Internet connection etc. My network I/O
status blue light stay on constantly (right side of
taskbar). When UPnP is disabled in the router the share
Internet icon goes away and my I/O lights quit blinking
constantly.

Any help or explanation is really needed because I need
to send files through Messenger but not at the expense
of my computer sharing its Internet connection when it is
not supposed to.

Thanks
Pete Carr

Greetings Pete,

In order to send files using the latest Linksys firmware, you will need to enable UPnP and
use MSN Messenger 5 or 6 -- there is no way around this.

The additional icon is by design -- this is how UPnP works. However, I'm not quite sure what
you mean by "Another computer shares this computers Internet connection", there's no reason
to go through the Network Setup Wizard again.

As for the I/O issue, normal UPnP activity can cause this to happen, try a quick reboot.

As well, you can find MSN Messenger 5 here:

and MSN Messenger 6 here:
