MSN 6 installs fine, and when it loads me up, it logs in
fine. However, the program promptly closes before i have
time to do anything. Is this a common problem. When i
had MSN 5.0 I blocked Windows messenger from loading
using registry editor because otherwise both would try to
log me in and both would fail. however, i can't remember
how to undo what i've done to see if this is what is
affecting it. Cheers in advance

Does the program crash? Or just exit?

I'd like to jump in here if I may. The other night I downloaded MSN
Messenger, as my sister was using it on her Windows 98 machine. I
downloaded the XP version. The problem is it doesn't remove Windows
Messenger and doesn't fully disable it either. WM doesn't necessarily
try and load on bootup, but 'sometimes' it does. I checked the config
settings by shutting down MSN Messenger and loading WM, and the load on
startup is not checked. The problem for me is WM loads on its own. For
example, The machine was booted this morning at 7AM, and 19 hours later
I see it in the system tray with a red x. Other times I found myself
logged out of MSN Messenger because Windows Messenger started to log in.
I see no uninstall for Windows Messenger.
Can you suggest something?

Nope, I can't uninstall Windows Messenger, only MSN Messenger which is
the one I want to keep.Windows Messenger isn't listed in the add/remove.

As I stead in my last post you must have service pack 1 for xp install for
you to uninstall messenger in Add/remove windows components

To remove Windows Messenger 4.7, close down Messenger (right click the
messenger icon in the
notification area/system tray and click close). Then click the start
button, then click Run
and type in (copy-paste if you like):

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

You can remove Windows Messenger 4.7, but if you do, you will be preventing
Remote
Assistance, Whiteboard, Application Sharing and any other applications that
utilize Messenger

I have service pack 1 for XP installed.
I have no link to an uninstall. I can try your link, but before I do, I
don't understand your statement that I'll lose Whiteboard, etc. Those
features seem to be available in MSN Messenger 6 as well, plus it has the
cam option, which I don't recall seeing with Windows Messenger.
Why are there two separate programs that do almost the same thing and
with two separate names out there? It makes no sense.

You should have the link to uninstall messenger if you have service Pack 1
installed, I know it sounds like I'm repeating myself, but I have multiple
computers running XP and this option is there, maybe I didn't explain it
well..
After you bring up add and remove programs, on the left side there are other
icons one is add and remove windows components, if you doulbe click on this
it will bring up another window and use the scroll bar and scroll right to
the bottom and messenger should be there
If it's not, I have no idea why, if Jonathan K is keeping an eye on the
thread maybe he can answer this
If you use the uninstall option I gave you in the last one provided by
Jonathan, it will completely uninstall messenger and you will lose the
components like Whiteboard because msn messenger uses some of the parts of
messenger for this.. if however you do it through the add and remove
programs it just removes the registry parts and leaves all the files intact
so that you still have the functionality under msn messenger
As to why there are two flavours, only microsoft can tell you. Windows
messenger is supposed to be geared to the business user and msn messenger is
geared to the home and recreational user and for that reason it is the same
as for XP where there are predominantly two versions, home and professsional
and with microsoft office where you have 4 versions. Personally I think
they are going the wrong way because as more and more people who use
computers for their businesses and also using computers at home they expect
the same functions as well as the children are using computers at school and
are brought up using the professional versions and only to find that when
they go home their versions don't have the same features... maybe I'm the
only one who thinks this way..

The program just exits, doesn't appear to crash, no
warnings pop up.
