I would guess that almost everyone has had those annoying
Messenger Service (not Windows Messenger) ads. I know
how to stop the ads, but how do these spammers send me
these ads in the first place, its a litte unsettleing
knowing that spammers can do this so simply.

Greetings Paul,

There's only a certain number of IP addresses on the Internet, they simply start the
beginning and work there way to the end.

I am new to the windows XP world and if you could help me
turn off those annoying Messenger Service ads, I would
really appreciate it.

Greetings!

To disable the Messenger Service in Windows XP just go through these steps:
(I'm using a Swedish copy of Windows, so I'm just roughly translating any
names of icons, windows and the like)

1. Open up the control panel
2. Click the icon with the pie chart. It probably says something about
"performance".
3. Click the "administration tools" icon.
4. Click the "services" icon.
5. In the list to your right, find something called "Messenger".
6. Double click it.
7. In the window appearing, there should be a dropdown box named something
like "starting method".
8. Click it and select "Manual".

Now, the next time you start your computer you will be rid of the messenger
service. If you don't feel like having to reboot, you can stop the messenger
service immediately by going through steps 1-5 above and clicking the "Stop"
or "Deactivate" link in the middle column.

This whole procedure will probably require you to have administrative
rights. Not to worry though, if you're running XP Home Edition you probably
already have...

Hope this is helpfull!
