View Full Version : Appear offline when idle... feature suggestion

Hi,

I really like the feature that allows me to receive instant messages on my
verizon cell phone when I have MSN messenger on my computer signed off. The
only thing I wish is that I were able to have MSN messenger automatically
put itself into the 'appear offline' state after I've been idle for a
certain amount of time. As it is now, when I'm idle, messenger can only put
itself into the 'away' state, which still allows users to send me messages
on my computer... yet I'd rather receive them on my phone when I'm idle. I
have to specifically remember to sign off MSN messenger if I'm leaving my
desk, which I don't like to do. I'd rather have it do so automatically, so
that people will know to send me messages on my phone when I am away from my
desk.

Thanks for listening,
Neil McQuarrie

Why not have a separate identity for your mobile?

Doesn't messenger sign you out of one location when you sign in somewhere
else? Or is this a nifty feature of the phone's version?

Hi guys, thanks for the response. I'm not sure if you understand me... I'm
not using MSN messenger on my phone... but I do have MSN messenger on my
computer configured to allow people to send SMS (i.e. text messages) to my
phone if I am offline. It's something you can do if you go to tools -->
options --> phone --> mobile settings.

Basically all I want is for MSN messenger to have the option to 'appear
offline' when idle. That way people won't send me messages when I'm not at
my computer. Notice that when people double click on your name when you are
offline, and if you have your mobile phone configured the way I described
above, they will have the option to send the message to your phone via text
message.

Thanks!

Neil

Set it manually, or do you want it to always remain that way after log in.

Greetings Neil,

In Messenger Plus (which only works in MSN Messenger 5 and Windows Messenger 4), in the
Preferences (open the main Messenger window, click the Plus! menu, then Preferences), under
the 'Miscellaneous' setting, you can set an idle delay to automatically set you as Appear
Offline or Signout (so messages would go to MSN Mobile).

You can find Messenger Plus here:
