lost files

windows xp would'nt start with my settings and went into
a temp desktop, I moved my original desktop over to this
temp by drag and drop before i realised it would not
save. Is there any way to retrieve these files?

the files lost were a mixture of excel, works
spreadsheets, adobe just about any i can think of,
