I bought an oem version of xp pro from accu pc (along
with other pc stuff for a home build) and it didnt come
with a product key. I didnt realize this until I got that
far in the installation. I cannot get a hold of anyone
there right now to resolve this and I am stuck on that
screen (asking for product key) in my install. Is there a
temp # i can use to finish the install (I know, probably
not) or how can I get out of that screen without screwing
up my machine. if I just turn off the pc will that screw
anything up?

You have a problem. Just abort the installation. No CD key no go.

Hi Fletch,

FYI. OEM versions are bios locked. If the bios is correct the
install will never ask for the product key. At least that is the way my
Dell works.

Maby you need to Flash or otherwise correct your bios.

Just a thought, but it may help. The seller should have a solution to
this situation.

Good Luck

No, OEM versions are not BIOS locked. This is just a
security measure that Dell, and all other major OEMs
build into their recovery systems for both security and
because MS tell them to!

Some can be gotten around quite easilly, although I will
obviously not name names or say how. However, an OEM box
will work fine on ANY machine as long as it has minimum
specs etc.

Just a point, if their is no certificate of authenticity
I would be checking the CD for the hologram around the
centre, make sure they haven't sold you a copy. They have
to give you the CD-Key when you buy it else they are also
breaking the law as this is not the package that you have
bought. They are essesntially selling you an incomplete
product and someone has obviously removed the certificate
that you have paid for. After all, it is the license you
paid form not the CD, you need that key.!

Greetings --

Not all OEM versions are BIOS-locked. While the major OEMs, like
Dell, Gateway, Compaq, etc, have chosen to use this method, the
generic OEM CDs (available through retail outlets with a piece of
hardware) are not.

Greetings --

Have you double-checked all of the packaging and documentation
that came with the CD? There's no way to proceed without the Product
Key.
