Running XP Pro that was preinstalled on an HP. The machine locked up and
was rebooted. When it started it came up with the following error on a DOS
(black) screen. Windows could not start because of the following file is
missing or corrupt: <windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe. Please re-install
a copy of the above file. We extracted it from an XP Pro CD and everything
looked ok except now Windows will not load. The windows XP screen comes up
with the green bar going across and then just reboots with no error.
Standard, Safe Mode, Safe Mode w/Prompt it doesn't matter, they all do the
same thing. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

I tried your links with the same results. Flashes Windows XP splash screen
for about 10-15 seconds, then goes black then reboots. I am at a loss but
hate to completely re-load if it is another problem. Any way to disable the
auto restart on error when you can't get into Windows?
Thanks for your help

Had you installed Service Pack 1 on your PC? If so, the NTOSKRNL.EXE file
is different and your PC won't boot with the pre-SP1 version. If you cannot
find the SP1 version, then you'll have to do a repair installation.
Boot from your XP disc, proceed as if you were doing a new installation, the
program will detect your existing installation and ask if you want to repair
it...

Sure, the ntoskrnl.exe file is updated in Service Pack 1. Therefore, if you
copy a pre-sp1 version on to it (usually only happens if you are doing
things like replacing your boot picture), then your PC won't work anymore
because of the wrong version of the file.
The eaiest way to fix it is to do a repair installation, but you might not
have that option on your HP. Your best bet is to phone HP but I can
guarantee they'll tell you to do a full system restore which will wipe your
files...
