I downloaded the latest security patch from update and
restarted. Windows messenger no longer recognizes my
name or password. How do I uninstall the messenger and
start over

Greetings,
Which update was it? You can find out (and undo the update) by using System Restore. To do
so, click Start, then Help & Support, then "Undo changes to my computer using System
Restore", choose 'Restore my computer to an earlier time', then click Next ->, then go
through the dates, and on the right, you'll see the updates that have been installed. Simply
go back to before you installed the update to see if this solves the problem.
