View Full Version : Office2000 problem.

Hi all,

I installed XPpro (english ver) and MSoffice2000pro (german ver)
for a friend on his SamsungA10 laptop. On opening just about any
word document (previously created with MSword) I first get a
"Word encountered file corruption while opening ...." error message
from which I can either attempt recovery or not. Attempting recovery
briefly opens the document and then I get I get a "MS Word for
windows application file" error message, in which it wants to send a
text file to MS. The laptop is not connected to the internet, and "don't
send" results in the application closing. I have saved the 121Kb text
error file for reference, but it really isn't very informative to the non-
MS 'techie'.

Thinking that ~maybe~ the german MSoffice conflicted with the
english XP, I installed my own MSoffice2000(std) on his machine but
I get the same error messages. I can open any of his documents on
my (also XP) PC, with out a hitch. Also, running a "detect and repair"
(MSword help) brings me to the same error message. In fact, opening
Word on his machine (without opening a doc file) produces the same
error message. Excel runs just fine.

Does anyone know what to look for in that error report ? If need be
I could email it to someone in the know, but pasting it to this message
is not a good idea I think. What else could I be missing ? Any additional
information needed ?

In essence, both his and my computers are setup up the same (with XP
and MSoffice2000), but his machine is a laptop - surely that can't make
a difference ?

TIA for any hints, suggestions or pointers.
Jona.

It *could* make a difference on the laptop if it wasn't shipped with XP...
Laptops are very finicky things when it comes to drivers and it IS possible
there is a driver issue caused the file corruption. Do you get this with
any non-Office files? I'd try the website of the laptops manufacturer to
see if they have any XP drivers. It might also be a good idea to reformat
and reinstall to make sure any last traces of the German version of Office
are definately gone.

Other than that, you could try asking the experts over in the Office
newsgroups to see if they've come accross a similar problem...

Lorne,

The laptop shipped with it's own german version of XP and a seperate
CD with the XP drivers, Norton, Adobe, etc. I merely installed a different
and english ver of XP using the drivers that shipped with the computer. I
might need to browse through that german XP CD looking for something,
but my German is too lousy for that to be any 'fun'.

In the meantime I found that if I log on as a 'guest' (on that laptop),
MSword opens the documents with no problem at all !! Now all
I need to do is figure out why. I'm a new XP user myself, so I'm
treading new waters here .... any ideas ?

Cheers for the help
Jona

Afraid not... It's probably best if you ask in the Office newsgroups as the
experts there know a lot more about Office than I do...

Thanks for the help anyway. As it turns out, it's a XP thing. As per a
previous post to the m.p.w.customize newsgroup, I got the user thingy
all cocked up. I logged on as Administrator, dumped my Office2000
(engl ver) again and re-installed his german version. Still no go, so I
figured all the in-and-uninstalling was leaving traces of versions and
causing conflicts when opening MSword did nothing at all. No word,
excel, pp, etc. Got fed up and dumped the whole lot, reformated c:
and reinstalled making sure that I was logged on as Administrator when
installing MSoffice. Funny though, that the previous install logged on as
default user rendered Office useable only to guest users ..... uhmmm,
well, so it seemed.
