View Full Version : IE and/or WinXP core problem

The problem that I'm currently experiencing started about
one month ago. Prior to this time (about 12 months --
ever since I got my new Inspiron 8200 laptop installed
with Windows XP Professional) I wasn't experiencing
anything like this. The problem is that when Windows XP
Professional first starts up -- when you first get to the
desktop -- and you click on the Start button and launch
Internet Explorer it takes about 3-4 minutes for Internet
Explorer to finally and fully launch. A few other
programs also have problems launching as well, but
Internet Explorer (I'm using versions 6) is by far the
greatest standout.

I started trying to find the problem (possibly a third-
party system extension running in the background) by
using msconfig. However, I noticed that by disabling all
services/processes did not solve the problem.
Nevertheless, I did find that starting up the computer in
Safe Mode did indeed solve the problem. Internet Explorer
launches without any problems whatsoever.

After much frustration I decided to do a complete repair
of my operating system. I just finished this about 30
minutes ago; the process took about 2-3 hours,
considering that I had to download about 60MB worth of
Microsoft updates. I did not download 100% of the
updates; I have had problems with programs running slowly
when security update #811493 had been installed. I made
sure that this security update was not part of the
installation.

But what I noticed is that when I started up Internet
Explorer the first time -- immediately after repairing
Windows XP from the CD-ROM and without installing any of
the security updates -- Internet Explorer launched
without any problems. Everything was working fine. So
naturally I thought that the repair of my system had
solved the problem and I went ahead and downloaded the
rest of the security/critical updates from Microsoft
(with the exception of the one noted above) and now the
problem is recurring. Extremely frustrating!

Any suggestions? I would absolutely love to figure out
what is going on! I'm sure -- obviously -- that it is one
of the security updates conflicting with some other piece
of software code, but now that I have gone through the
process of repairing and rebuilding the system I do not
want to have to start all over again. I guess what I'm
asking is whether or not anyone else has experienced
similar problems?

Thanks in advance!
