View Full Version : trying to auto connect at startup
Tony
December 5th 03, 03:08 PM
Hi,
Upgraded computer and reinstalled fresh XP Pro. Used to
have Messenger 5 load up at startup with no problems;
when connected to Internet (ASDL), Messenger logged in.
All great!
However now, either with Messenger 5 or 4.7, whenever I
boot, Messenger tries to connect straight away, and an
error comes up (as I am not connected to Net). V
annoying, and how do I stop it? (ticked/unticked all
usual options)
Have Messenger Plus installed, but did previously too
with no problems...

Greetings Tony,
Do you have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed? Norton added a new "instant messaging scanning"
feature to Norton Antivirus 2003, which can conflict with Messenger and cause this behavior.
To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in the System
Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click Options, then
Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.

Thanks Jonathan...
However, although I do have NAV2003 installed, I did
before too. Also, the options are unticked anyway as NAV
says it does not support version 5, only 4.7 and below.
Still annoyed :)!

Hi Tony,
Yes, that is correct, although the Messenger Plus, MSN Messenger 5, Windows Messenger 4.7,
NAV 2003 combination can sometimes do this anyway -- although if you have it unchecked,
that's not the problem.
I'm assuming you've already unchecked the 'Run this program when Windows starts' and 'Run
Messenger when Windows starts' options in Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger, in the Tools
menu, Options, Preferences or General tabs, respectively. Assuming no other application is
starting them, you might just use MSConfig to stop them -- click Start, then Run, enter
"msconfig" and click OK, then click the Startup tab, uncheck the 'msmsgs' and 'msnmsgr'
entries and click OK.

When I do all the unchecking, Messenger doesn't load, but
I actually want it to. It used to load and open at
startup, but not come up with an error message saying it
couldn't sign on - strangely no Internet connection
dialogue comes up though? I think it's something to do
with something elsewhere i.e. not a 'fault' with
Messenger...

Sorry, forgot something that may help. If I create a
shortcut, and add /background to the executable, it works
fine - i.e no connection request. If I then
disable 'Start at Startup' option in Messenger, then put
the shortcut in the Startup folder, it seems to work but
Messenger Plus fails to load :(

Hi Tony,
I see what you're saying now. Yes, that would be an adequate workaround, however Plus should
still be working.
You may just need to install Plus over again:
