I am going to upgrade to XP Pro. I'd like to setup a
separate partition for the operating system. I have a
20GB hard drive. Can anyone tell me what the optimum
partition size should be for the operating system so that
I can leave as much space as possible for the remaining
partition.

Feel free to email me direct.

Thanks.

Hi,

"Optimum" depends on how you plan on using the system. WinXP requires a
minimum of 1.5GB, but I wouldn't go with less than 5GB for the average
installation.

I had initially set aside a 5GB partition for XP and programs but soon found
I was rapidly running out of space though hadn't installed a lot of extra
apps. Since I have Partition Magic it wasn't any great problem to resize to
10GB but could have been otherwise.

Kenny,

For this exact reason, I do NOT recommend that anyone partition a HDD (well,
at least if it is less than 80GB). Let NTFS manage the HDD for you and you
won't "hit the wall" by running low on disk space for your boot drive. [BTW,
I used to have 4 or 5 partitions "in the old days" when a 340MB HDD was
"big". <g> Lots of changes in OS, memory and HDD management, plus "software
bloat" lead me to a different conclusion today.]

Main reasons I partition my drive are:
a) I dual boot with Win98
b) I keep my mp3's, photos, program installation files etc. on a different
one to either OS. Then if there's an irrerepairable crash on OS partition I
haven't lost all my other files. This has happened to me in the past with
not partitioning.
3) Maybe being overly cautious but I also use Drive Image and save an image
to another partition, also to CDRW, this has saved me hours of work having
to re-install everything from scratch.
