I learned today that this is widespread from some administrators of
large corporate LANs. The nameless desktop icon and the inability to
access MSN or hotmail (and other site) are evidently pretty common
right now. Something is definitely up. I hope it's just software
that needs a critical update due to a code change and not a really
nasty piece of malicious code.

If you didn't see my other post, it appears that a critical update
fixed my problem on my XP machine. I couldn't update my XP or
Symantec before, but magically tonight they worked. I guess all those
tech reports and error reports finally paid off. I had to download
them one at a time and boot between each or they would hang, but it
worked.

Thanks to all for your help in time of need.
