I downloaded "Messenger" to be able to talk to a friend
and I ended up not using this service at all, but now I
can not get it off my harddrive!! This is really making me
mad, because I will not use it now or will I ever use it.
Does anyone know how to get rid of this program?

Greetings,
To remove Windows Messenger, close down Messenger if it's running (right click the messenger
icon in the notification area/system tray and click close). Then click the start button,
then click Run and type in (copy-paste if you like):
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
Then click OK.
Messenger will then be uninstalled. For more detailed instructions and screenshots, go to,

Jonathan,
I ran this once because I thought I wanted to remove Windows Messenger. Now
I want to reinstall the program and I've gone tried going through the
control panel..add or remove programs..add/remove windows components and
that doesn't seem to want to get it running again. What's your advice?
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,
The Add/Remove Windows Components simply removes the shortcut (and a few registry entries) --
it does not remove the actual application like the command in my previous post does and as
such, it can't reinstall it.
To reinstall Windows Messenger, simply download the latest version from here:
http://messenger.microsoft.com/download/download.asp?client=0.
