View Full Version : Frequent hangs (freezes)

After a reinstallation of WinXP Pro I have been plagued by random hangs that
do not seem to have any pattern that would lead me to an explanation. They
occur while using different applications or when leaving the computer for a
short or long time. What I would like to get some help on is where can I
look for some reason for this strange and frustrating problem. Turning off
the power is the only thing possible to get going again. Any ideas will be
appreciated.
Dell Dimension 8100 P4 1.3
512 RAM
40 gb boot drive
160 gb (Promise Ultra IDE Controller)
ATI All in Wonder Radeon 8500 DV

Usually three possibilities that I've seen that will cause this.
1. Memory stick going bad.
2. Internal fan not working (including in the power supply)
3. Internal heat buildup, like the back of the PC is against the
wall or back of desk with no ventilation.
Pull the case off the PC and inspect the fans, while you have the case
off, get a can of air and blow out all the dust bunny's that have
built up inside. Leave the case off for a few day to verify if it is
a heat issue.
