View Full Version : Windows XP Pro stops before the Welcome screen

The Windows XP Pro on my home PC cannot start, the welcome
screen does not appear at all, the Windows stops just
before it, only an icon "Microsoft Windows XP" is
visualized on the scrren. The Windows stops at this point
even when I try to log in Safe mode.

The mouse pointer is not freezed (it is moving), the
keyboard seems not working (Ctrl-Alt-Del does not provide
any change). No error messages are diplayed. After several
minutes the screen saver becomes activated and could be
deactivated by the mouse moving.

The Windows is XP Pro 2002 with Service Pack 1 installed.

I tryed many restarts, tried in safe modes - every time
the Windows stops at this point. What could be done.

I would use the CD to do a repair install just the way it is
described in

Bob,
There are a lot of details you neglected to include, was this a preinstalled
XP system with only restore media and not a XP CD that can be used for
repairing or reinstalling XP. If it is and OEM system without XP CD, do you
have the option to do a selective restore, or is it's only option a reformat
and reinstall to original shipped state?
Was this a retail Upgrade or Full version CD?
Was it a OEM CD?
If your system came with an XP CD or you purchased a retail or OEM version
of XP.
Try booting from the XP CD and load Recovery Console. When you reach the
prompt, type FIXBOOT then EXIT. If that doesn't work return to Recovery
Console and at the prompt type FIXMBR.
Repeat to type FIXBOOT once again. If this doesn't work,
Try doing a Repair Install.

If it only came with restore media, consult the OEM documentation.
