View Full Version : XP Hot Fix clean up?

I'm trying to clean up my C drive and have a number of
installed items listed as 'Windows XP Hot Fix' an example is:

Windows XP Hot Fix (SP1) see q314862 for more details. File
size 70.12mb

I'm assuming these were XP updates I received
automatically. Can I delete all these programs, or will it
delete the updates?

Hi Phil,

If you have no intention of uninstalling any particular hotfix (and yes,
they are the result of Windows Updates - each represents an update that is
uninstallable, not all are), then delete the associated $NtUninstallqxxxxxx$
file under C:\Windows first (you must have folder options set to view hidden
and system files for this to appear). Then go to Add & Remove in the Control
Panel and select the hotfix for removal. You will get an error message, then
an option to remove it from the listings.

I would recommend that you leave the uninstall file for each update in place
for a few weeks after installation, just in case a conflict arises and you
need to uninstall it. Afterwards, you can remove it. Once removed, then
update cannot be uninstalled.
