View Full Version : Windows Messenger / MSN Messenger

Hi,
I use XP Home with Windows Messenger 4.7, but have recently setup MSN
explorer for my wife to use whilst the system runs under my profile/login.
(I tried making a dedicated profile/account for her, but found many
applications would not work, like "SpyBlocker"- even if I gave her account
administrator status)
Anyhow, back to the point.... When she signs in to MSN explorer, it signs me
out of Windows Messenger and signs her in instead. All this is fine,
however, I would like to know - if I install MSN Messenger, will she then be
signed in to MSN Messenger, leaving me signed in to the Windows Messenger?
I only thought of this as I notice that her MSN sign in name is not listed
in "my network passwords" - so presumably MSN Explorer does not use the XP
Net Passport thing (Sorry to be so technical!)
Thanks
Chris

Greetings Chris,
MSN Explorer (the version that came with Windows XP), will use Windows Messenger for its
Messenger client, and will automatically log her into her account when she logs into MSN
Explorer. If you install MSN Messenger (5 or 6), MSN Explorer will continue to use Windows
Messenger, so if you wanted to still be signed into Messenger, you'll need to be the one
using MSN Messenger.
MSN Explorer does use .NET Passport, but no, it's not integrated with the normal .NET
Passport dialog box in Windows XP (but still can use the XP Passport settings).

Microsoft is complicating our lives that is for sure.
And it looks like users are trying to do the best they can to complicate
already complicated things even more.
This is a perfect "Murphy story" ; MS = Murphy (but not by accident)?

Dear Jonathan, I still believe it is the other way round, atleast this is
what is happening with me for the past 1 and a half year. I use MSN Explorer
as the only means of getting to my mail box, and I have MSN Explorer 7 that
came with XP, it always uses MSN Messenger by default. Initially it used MSN
Messenger 5 and after I installed 6, it now uses MSN Messenger 6. I believe
it is Windows Messenger that can be subsequently used to log on another user
while one is already logged on to MSN Explorer. Correct me if I am wrong or
else please guide me as to what is wrong with my system. Thanking in
anticipation. Usman
