View Full Version : Problems with Computer Name

Russ White

I've changed my computer name, and renamed the icons for
"My Computer," "My Network Places," and "My Documents," (I
_really_ wish MS wouldn't treat me like a child of about 4,
I'm not a child of about 4, and I don't have a big label on
my my house that says: "My House").

Although I've changed these, and even gone through the
resgirstry looking for instances of these nonsense names,
Windwos XP periodically changes them back for me. There
doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to why or when it
does this. I will sometimes bring up explorer, and it
changes them there, and won't let me change them back.
Almost every time I browse for a file in an application,
the names are wrong. And, about every other time I reload
my machine for whatever reason, it comes back up with "My
Crap" all over the place.

There seems to be a serious mental problem at MS about "My"
this and "My" that, and they seem to have written it so
hard into this software that the software has some mental
instability over it.

Anyone know of any final, certain, positive, definite,
won't change back, way of changing these things?

Are you changing it in Local Machine or Current User? Some users report
similar problems when doing it in Local Machine.

See www.dougknox.com, Win XP Utilities, Rename System (Desktop) Icons for a
small VB utility that will allow you to rename My Computer, My Documents, My
Network Places, Recycle Bin and the default IE desktop icon. It does it by
changing the values in HKEY_CURRENT_USER.

I actually went through the resgistry on a search and
destroy mission, removing every instance of "My Computer,"
"My Documents," and "My Network Places," that I could find.
It still changes back, on every reboot now, like it did
this morning.

It seems to be hard coded into the software, and there's no
way to get around it. MS is trying to assimilate me.

So, I went through the registry again, and changed all the
things in there to their correct names, and XP, again,
changed everything back to "My Computer," etc. this morning.

This is stupid. If MS can't make a product that can hang on
to a name change, why should I trust a single line of the
rest of their code?
