Automatic Restart???

The other night, a small box appeared on the screen and
told me to shut down all of my programs because windows
needed to restart. It began a countdown of 50 or 60
seconds, and then restarted. Is this supposed to happen?

No. You should turn on your firewall. If that had been Windows Update, it would
have asked permission to restart.
