Hello,

I recently installed win XP (incl SP1) on my desktop (PIII850, 256 MB RAM,
ASUS CUSL2-C motherboard, lots of disk space). All critical updates done,
too.

The first install, upgrading from W98SE, was not very stable. Second install
(fresh) was even worse. Third install (fresh, after HDD reformatting) works
more or less, but frequently, e.g. on software install (involving HDD and CD
ROM activity), printing, etc I get random reboots, or blue screens with any
of the following :

- IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL
- PAGED FAULT IN NONPAGED AREA
- PFN LIST CORRUPT
- MEMORY MANAGEMENT ERROR (or sth similar)

Since during Win XP installs (but not the last one) I repeatedly had random
unaccessible files on the Win XP CD, I suspected that the DMA and PIO modes
were unadequate, as the knowledge base suggests. So I disabled all DMA
access and set all PIO modes to 2 on all disks (3) and on the DVD ROM.

Even that did not help.

Any clue ? thanks in advance...

Airy
