Hey
Thanks in advance for any suggestions re: this problem
I have been using Win Messenger and OE6 for my Hotmail
for a while now. Suddenly I cannot sign in. OE tells me
my password/username is wrong (even though it isn't )-
and the CaSe of the password is fine too. Also when I
type in my password in the remember password thing, it
fails to remember it all of a sudden. And with Win
Messenger it takes ages trying to sign in then says that
the service is down or there's a problem with my net
connection. The service is not down, I checked. And my
account is still active, I checked that too. Any ideas?
Thanks

Greetings Ace,
Here are some suggestions you might want to try/check:
1. The date on your computer needs to be set properly -- double click the clock verify that
the time and date are set.
2. If your password information is not saved, verify that you are typing it in with the
correct case (uppercase or lowercase).
3. Change your password @ http://memberservicesnet.passport.com/memberservice.srf, then try
signing in again.
4. If you use a firewall (like ZoneAlarm, Norton Internet Security etc. ), it's possible
that Messenger doesn't have the correct rights to access the Internet. You may need to
re/add Messenger to the allowed list of programs in your firewall if this is the case.
5. If you disabled your firewall in the past, it still may be blocking Messenger -- try
restarting it and see if that helps the situation. You also might try uninstalling an
installed firewall, to verify that it isn't causing a problem (even if it is disabled).
6. Check your IE Security settings -- open Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, then
Internet Options, then Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section, and verify that "Check
for server certificate revocation" is unchecked. Also verify that 'Use SSL 2.0' and Use SSL
3.0' is checked, then click OK.
7. Click Start, then Run, and enter the following:
regsvr32 softpub.dll
then click OK
8. Check your IE Internet Zone and cookie settings -- Open Internet Explorer, click the
Tools menu, then Internet Options, then click the Delete Files button, and when that's
complete click the Delete Cookies button. Then, click the Security tab, click Internet
(should already be selected), click the Default Level button, and then click OK.

Hi Jon
Thanks a lot for your reply, however I am still having
the same problems.
Going through your list...
1) yes
2) yes
3) yes
4) I use Norton Internet Security 2003. Permit all access
has been given to Win Messenger (although it is listed as
Microsoft MSN Messenger??). I have tried disabling
firewall, to no avail.
5) have tried turning off every security service, and Win
Messenger has full access. uninstalling firewall is a bit
drastic for me, all those settings ;-) if that is the
problem then i'd rather go d/l MSN Messenger and see how
that fares
6) all fine here
7) not tried yet - what does this do?
8) yes
as i say, thanks for your suggestions. any further
pointers would be appreciated, before i am forced to
resort to yet another Microsoft product ;-) believe me,
one is enough lol
Thank you

Hi Ace,
4 -- MSN Messenger 4 and Windows Messenger 4 actually were the same product (the same
executable file), this is why you're seeing it listed as MSN Messenger.
7 -- Basically this reinstalls the primarily SSL component, which Messenger utilizes (for
Passport).
If Windows Messenger doesn't work, it's highly unlikely that MSN Messenger will, I'd also
encourage you to perhaps try using a different Messenger client (say, Trillian --
http://www.trillian.cc) or attempt to sign in using a different computer.

Hi Jonathan
Thanks a lot for that, I will try step 7 and if that
doesn't work i'll just use a different IM client for the
time being. I have used trillian before, but favoured
Windows Messenger. Oh well ;)
Thanks a lot for your help, I really do applaud you on
your efforts. You only have to look down the list here to
see the effort you put in, and I wish you all the best
because of that.
Best regards,
Ace

I don't know if it will help you but for over 2 months, I was unable to use
one of my passports with any version of Wiindows Messenger later than
4.7.0041. I updated the firmware to my Microsoft broadband gateway today
and suddenly that passport is working fine with updated versions of WM.
