I have recently purchased a new tower with a new hard
drive. My old hard drive has been istalled in the new
tower and contains many programs I would like installed
on the new drive; Works, Excel, Microsoft Office etc.
How do I do this?

Depends on the application. Some will allow you to simply launch them and
they will run. Others, specifically the ones you mentioned, must be formally
installed on the new OS instance, although you can install over the top of
the original location.

You can do what I did, and that is to just install your software fresh.
Then move your documents from the old drive to your new documents directory.
Especially with Office, I think it is easier to just re-install it and get
the updates for it. I think the only thing that really changes on those
programs are the documents you write so it shouldn't be a problem to just
re-install Office since you still have your documents that can stay where
they are at, or moved to your new documents directory.

I am slowing going to copy all old documents over to the new drive and then
reformat that drive for storage and backups.

You mean as a second drive?

With an occasional very rare exception (none of the programs you
mention), you have to reinstall the programs from scratch.
