New Laptop

Hi Everyone
I had a laptop for Christmas with Windows XP Home installed. I am =
reading through this Newsgroup to see if there is anything I should take =
note of. I have only used W98SE on my Desktop and I am quite familiar =
with that but XP I have never used!! I am seeing a lot about =
Administrator Accounts. I turned my laptop on for the first time =
yesterday and starting looking around with no probs. I don't recall =
anything to do with Administrator and I certainly didn't have to use a =
password or anything. There will only ever be me using the machine as =
such so I won't have to set up other accounts for anyone else.
The one thing that did surprise me was that I put a CD-Rom in and it =
didn't Autorun. That could have been something to do with the laptop =
(Toshiba Satellite A30-714) though rather than XP. Think I am going to =
have to get a book on XP to do some research.

Three things to do:

1. Install a firewall. ZoneAlarm is a good one (free version available)

2. Install an AntiVirus Program

3. Download/Install "all" Window updates.

The account that Windows XP initially starts with is an Administrator
account. A password is optional. User accounts need to be specifically
established {see Help and Support}.

A CD-ROM will only autoplay if it has a autorun file on it or you instructed
Windows on what to do with the CD. Open My Computer, right click on the CD
drive and select Properties. Check the Autoplay tab to determine what you
have instructed Windows to do with the CD. If the information on the
Autoplay tab looks correct, right click on My Computer and select
Properties, Then select the Hardware tab and click on Device Manager
button. Check to see if Device Manager shows any problems. If not, expand
the CD folder. Right click on the CD drive and select Properties. Try the
Trouble Shooter.

I find the WinXP firewall adequate for my purposes.

The laptop probably came with an anti-virus, but it may need to be
installed. One of my laptops had an icon on the desktop to install the AV.
After installing the AV turn off email scanning. It provides no added
protection and will screw up Outlook Express.
