View Full Version : Xp Upgrade

Has anyone any idea why I can't upgrade my system from ME to XP? I have
recently upgraded my hard drive motherboard, processor and power supply (new
computer really!) and my (legitimate) copy of XP is difficult to instal. It
will boot from the CD and format the drive but then misses a couple of files
whilst copying. I can get XP to work for a while but it seems unstable to
me. Yet when I instal my ME there is no problem even though this is an
upgrade CD it will instal from the cd and after verifying that I have a copy
of 98 installs first time everytime.
I have an Athlon 2000+ processor plenty of ram and the only difference is
that my original XP disk was for a Compaq machine.

Thanks in advance

Ali

There is your answer. OEM copies of XP are meant for the machine they were
sold for AND THAT MACHINE ONLY.

Ali,

You need to purchase a new copy of XP. You have an OEM licence there which
is tied to the Compaq it came with. I believe that HP also BIOS lock their
installations (HP bought Compaq about 18 months ago). It maybe legitimate,
but it's not for the system you're installing it on now. You cannot legally
install any version of Windows on more than one system and OEM versions are
especially restrictive....

You need to purchase a retail licence - an upgrade will do just fine...

Dell also BIOS lock their XP CD's, they won't install on any other brand.

Greetings --

It won't work properly because the Compaq OEM version of WinXP
that you're using was designed by Compaq to install and function only
upon the original motherboard, and no other. OEM versions of the OS
are customized by the PC manufacturer to work only upon their often
unique and proprietary hardware, and generally lack the systems file
and drivers necessary to work on a wider variety of hardware
components.

Thanks for that guys, I have noticed (now that you mention it!) that during
the installation there is a mention of bios during the instal. I had better
get another copy!

Thanks again

If you do get a new license be sure it's not an OEM license. They are
cheaper but they will be locked into the first machine they are installed
into
