View Full Version : two versions of OS

Metrov
April 19th 03, 10:39 PM
I recently upgraded win98 to winXP pro. The first time
round, I installed using the 'upgrade' option, but then
had some instability problems with the OS.

A friend explained that it is much better to do a
complete 'fresh' install, instead of an 'upgrade'
install.

So I re-installed XP, this time using the 'fresh' install
option. But now upon booting, I have both versions of the
OS on the prompt screen, and Windows asks me which one I
want to use.

How can I eliminate one of the versions? Is one unused
version not taking up excess harddrive space/resources?

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks, M

This worked for me after a failed install left me with 2 XP's in boot menu.

Metrov,

The first thing you have to determine is which of the XP installs actually
works. Its likely the one on your D: drive, but BOOT.INI doesn't reference
the drive letter. If this is correct, then you would remove the

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect

entry from BOOT.INI. You can then remove the Windows directory from the C:
drive. Windows will continue to load from D:, and the only way to change
that would be to reinstall, or to do a "repair" installation on the XP
install that's on C:. If you delete files/folders from the C: drive, you
need to be sure to leave the following files:

BOOT.INI
NTLDR
NTDETECT.COM
PAGEFILE.SYS
HIBERFIL.SYS
AUTOEXEC.BAT
CONFIG.SYS
IO.SYS
MSDOS.SYS
BOOTSECT.DOS

Some of these files may not exist.

Thanks, Kenny, but that link doesn't seem to apply to my

Gosh, I didn't even realize that I had a WINDOWS directory
on my D Drive until I read your note, and looked there.
And sure enough, it's there. I didn't realize I was
installing a 2nd OS. I'd really like to keep the OS on
my C Drive. In that case can you please confirm that I
would do the following:

1 -- Do a "Repair" installation of the OS on the C Drive.

2 -- Then, remove the OS on the D Drive by deleting the
Boot.ini entry? [And in this case I can remove the WINDOWS
directory completely from D Drive, and not have to leave
any files (as per your list: BOOT.INI, NTLDR,
NTDETECT.COM, etc)?

3 -- Anything else I need to be aware of in order not to
completely screw up my machine?

Thanks so much for your help. Metrov

See http://www.dougknox.com, Win XP Tips, How to do a "Repair" Installation
for information on this topic. Once the repair is done, and you've reapplied
any desired updates and are happy with the performance of the repaired
installation, you can remove the reference to the D: drive installation from
BOOT.INI and remove whatever files you wish from the D: drive.

The files that I said needed be left on the C: drive still need to be there.
The C: drive is the boot drive, and those files are common, regardless of
which copy of XP you boot. They'll still need to be there, even after you
repair the original installation.

As with any operation, such as an install, you should backup anything you
can't afford to lose, just in case.

you can also
go start/run - enter 'msconfig'/
go 'boot.ini tab'/
click - 'chk all boot paths'/
sys will prompt you
concerning the duplicate(s) entry
'would you like to remove it from the boot.ini file'
ans - yes
