while booting i get the message all the time
"checking file system on c:/"
can i fix this

This is "normal" behavior after a non-normal shutdown. If XP goes down
without dismounting filesystems cleanly then on startup the filesystems are
found marked as not dismounted properly and so a check is done prior to
remounting them to look for damage.
You probably don't want to avoid the check. So, the "fix" is to figure out
why XP is (apparently) not shutting down cleanly. What happens when you shut
it down?

Try letting the check complete overnight (eg don't abort) and then reboot.
