View Full Version : Linksys Router and MSN messenger 6 voice/video problems

I am using a Linksys BEFW11S4 with the latest firmware
1.45 with Windows XP and having difficulties using the
video/voice conference in MSN Messenger 6. I've tried
calling linksys, they have been giving me a different
solution everytime I call, and none of them seem to work.

I've read many suggestions none of them seem to work
either. Many people say just enable the upnp on the router
and msn will automatically do the rest. Which is not the
case. I have three questions:

1. Do the machines who wish to use voice/video need to
have a static IP?

2.Do I have to enable UPNP on the router and install the
UPNP services provided by microsoft? Or just one of them?

3. Do I need to open specific ports? If so which ones and
which tab should I be entering this info on the router
configuration page?

I've been trying different combinations and doesn't seem
to work.

It'll be great if microsoft and Linksys worked together
and solved this problem once and for all.

Greetings Jason,

1. Nope.
2. Nope, support in the router is all you need, installing the support in Windows will give
you some extra functionality in managing the router in Windows, but won't effect Messenger.
3. The whole point of UPnP, is no configuration required, as such, no ports -- in fact
opening ports can cause problems.

Firstly, try using Windows Messenger 4.x instead -- my question back to you would be, what
specifically is the problem (inability to connect, not able to hear the other side, etc.)?

Jonathan,

Thank you for your informative response. When I try to
start a voice/video session, The other party can hear and
see me and I am unable to hear or see them.

In theory, opening ports to play multiplayer games can
cause problem for MSN messenger?

Thanks
Jason

Hi Jason

These are the setting I use with my linksys BEFW11S4 router i do not use a
firewall
other than the router you must have latest firmware,
you must have UPnP Enable on the router to get the Internet Gateway to
appear in view network connections
And the router to appear in My Network Places
UPnP Enable/Disable radio button in on the password tab in the router
setting,

I have found that with lisksys routers is that you must a have universal
plug and play installed as well internet gateway device discovery and
control client, go to control panel, add or remove programs, windows
components, networking services, click on details and install
if they are already installed in control panel go to, administrative tools,
services, and look for universal plug and play device, and see if it started
if it is set to start automatic change to manual right click on it go
properties startup type and from drop down box select manual and do the same
for SSDP Discovery service you may have to reboot after reboot you should
see your router in my network places and in view network connections you
will see internet gateway if this fails to work try uninstalling and
reinstalling universal plug and play and internet gateway device discovery
also if you right click on the Internet Gateway and go to propertis,
settings, and delete all the memsgs settings

Posr back and let me know how you get on

I am also exhausted with this prob. I finally got the UPnP enabled,
and magically we were able to connect for audio.
However we could not hear each other....I found another group that
mentioned probs with the driver for intel network card, I rolled back
the previous driver and now I have a one sided conversation. My wife
can hear me but I cannot hear her....I have tried changing the network
card to a Linksys model, with no change. Hopefully someone has the
magic answer for this.
