You didn't give much details of your current setup, ie.
type of connection, router?, firewall?, etc.

This may be a shot in the dark, but try either un-
checking the QoS Packet Scheduler or uninstall it if you
are use windows dialup to connect to the Internet.

You may also want to try with the firewall (ICS/ICF, Zone
Alarm, Norton Personal Firewall, etc. - if installed)
disabled. Make sure you restart WM or MM after you
disable the firewall.

There is a chance that Windows XP has not detected the
features of the new motherboard correctly. If all fails,
you may have to re-install Windows XP from scratch.

Hi

Thanks for your answer.

I have 2 networked PC's behind a Netgear FR114P router on a DSL connection.
My second PC(Amd Athlon) has no problems whatsoever with Messenger
audio/video, neither did this PC before my motherboard-upgrade.

I've already uncheked it. Otherwise my contact couldn't hear me at all.

No software firewall installed. XP firewall is disabled.

My motherboard(Asus P4P800) died a few days ago, so I got a Giga-byte 8KNXP
instead, but the problem is _exactly_ the same. So I did as suggested:
Formatted my harddisk and installed XP pro. again. Before installing
_anything_ else than what was nescessary to make Messenger work, I tried a
Video-conversation(with several contacts), but again the problem stays
_exactly_ the same.

Both the motherboards I've had problems with uses the new Intel chipsets
(865PE/875P). There must be some incompatibillity with these chipsets and
Messenger, or maybe Messenger doesn't like P4's Hyper-Threading in XP Pro.

I have no idea what to do about it, but it's driving me nuts.

Best regards

It sounds like there may be a problem with your current
Win XP Install. Your best option is to do a full re-
install from scratch. Often its best to do a full re-
install when you change a major component, especially
when the change is a major one, like in your case.

I don't think the problem is with the new Intel chipset,
as a friend of mine also has a similar setup and has no
problems. I suspect that there may be a issue with the
latest Intel PRO NIC drivers and QoS. A lot of Intel PRO
NIC users (inc. myself), have to either uncheck or
uninstall the QoS Packet Scheduler in order for voice and
webcam to work.

Can you also confirm what OS and which version of
Messenger are you running on your 2nd PC? If it's, MSN
Messenger, the problem maybe because either UPnP is not
turned on, on your router or the router does not support
it. MSN Messenger has been written to work via
NAT/routers. Hence, if that's what you have been using
on your 2nd PC, that's why it works. Windows Messenger
on the other hand requires a UPnP router to work. You
may want to re-confirm that your router has UPnP support
(a firmware update may be required) and it's switched
on. You may also need to enable "Internet Gateway Device
Discovery and Control" and/or "Universal Plug and Play"
on Windows XP too!!

Good luck and please post back your results.

Yes, but thats what I did!!
Formatted the harddisk and installed XP from the CD. Can't be cleaner than
that.

Before installing _anything_ else on my PC I tried audio/video in Windows
messenger, and it had the sync problem.

That's why I'm pretty convinced that it must be some incompatibillity
between my new motherboard and messenger.

Btw. Yesterday I tried video-conversation in Yahoo messenger and Eyeball
chat. No problems with sound or sync.

I also had to uncheck QoS to be able to use audio/video, but it didn't solve
the sync. problem.

My second PC also use XP pro. and it works with both Windows- and
MSN-messenger. My router is a Netgear FR114P, with the latest firmware. UPNP
is enabled in the router and UPNP & IGDDaC are installed on both my PC's. If
I disable UPNP I can't connect to the other person at all.

I assume it's the same person that you are communicating
with on your 2nd PC? Have you tried with other contacts
to confirm if the problem is not just with that
particular person. It can easier be a problom at the
other end!

Are you completely sure that you that you have ran the
audio wizard to confirm that the mic works. I've heard
of cases when the mic would work for a while and then
after a reboot, it doesn't work. This can still be the
case, even when the mic it works in Yahoo.

Just a couple of other things to try :-

1. Make sure you have Win XP SP1a installed.
2. "Un-install" the QoS packet Scheduler.
3. Clear any MSMSG port forwarding (added by UPnP, if
any) on the router.
4. Try re-assign another internal IP to the 1st PC, if
possible swap the IP addresses around with the 2nd PC.
5. Try voice/webcam chat with other contacts.

That's all I can think of based on the information you
have provide. Try posting another message if you still
get no joy. Sorry!

BTW - Yahoo and Eyeball communicates via a server, hence
it's able to get around NAT. Windows Messenger uses a
peer to peer protocol and hence requires UPnP to work via
a router.
