Greetings Sid9,

A few things could be causing this. Firstly, both you and your contact may just need to go
through the Audio/Video Tuning Wizard again. To do so, open up the main Messenger window,
click the Tools menu, then Audio/Video Tuning Wizard.

Secondly, if either of you are behind a third-party firewall (Norton Firewall, Sygate, Mcafee
Firewall, ZoneAlarm, etc.) make sure that Messenger is set to 'Permit All', 'Allow All', or
that the firewall is set to 'Medium' (especially for ZoneAlarm).

Thirdly, if either you or your contact are using a router, the router must support either
Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) for audio to consistently work properly. A number of routers
now support UPnP, but they may need a firmware update. Check your router manufacturers
website to see if there's an update for UPnP, or simply reply back here with the brand and
model of the router and we can quickly check to see if UPnP is available.

Fourthly, if you're able to connect, just not hear each other, you might try turning off the
QoS Packet Scheduler. To do so, click Start, then click the Control Panel. If you're in
category view click Network and Internet connections then click Network Connections. Right
click your network/internet connection, then click Properties. Uncheck the QoS Packet
Scheduler, then reboot and try again..

Thank you for the prompt response.

We were never able to use netmeeting after both sides connect to the
internet through another computer.
The new Messenger has overcome this problem for the VIDEO, but not for
SOUND.

Does that add any more information that might narrow down the cause?

Thank you again!

I am having the same problem. Can send files, can video
conference, but no audio. I am using a Linksys BEFW11S4
router. Sure wish I could get my audio working. Any
help or tips to get it working would be greatly
appreciated. I have the latest firmware on the router
and it has UDP forwarding on it but I don't really know
what to do to get audio working. I just tried putting my
computer IP in the DMZ hoping that would resolve it.

Even if both ends are using cable (broadband) and a network card?

So the "rumor" that 6.0 will work behind a router without UPnP is wrong
then?
Will 6.0 use the same port ranges as 4.7?

Jone.

Hi Sid9,

In order to establish an audio conversation in Messenger when a PC is using Internet access
provided through a NAT (that is, through another computer sharing an Internet connection),
the NAT must support Universal Plug and Play (UPnP). Currently via software NATs, the only
two that support UPnP, are the built-in Internet Connection Sharing in Windows XP, and
WinRoute 5.0. Both sides will need to have UPnP capable NATs in order for this to work.
