if you keep the preview pane, it will do exactly that,
preview the next available email. By getting rid of the
preview pane this will not happen. The only way you will
be able to view the email is by double clicking it to
open the pane.
Obviously you are bound to be susceptible to virus attack
if you don't have anti virus software on your machine
complete with up to date virus definitions. So long as
you have anti virus software andy potentially virused
mail will be checked and you will be informed. You can
then instruct the anti virus software to delete it
without it doing any harm to your system. immediately any
virus is located an anti virus program will quarantine it
so it cannot infect your system. Anti Virsu software is a
must! If you haven't got anti virus software on your
system i suggest you download the free version of AVG
anti Virus (www.grisoft.com) to protect your system. You
can schedule the application to perform updates at a time
when you are normally online.

Hope this helps
