They are two different file structure systems. You can
copy files from a FAT32 drive onto a NTFS drive but you
cannot directly convert them as you must (re)format a hard
drive with NTFS.

Other than that... the PC has been much more stable since
it was switched to NTFS.

That is not correct.

Conversion from FAT32 to NTFS can be done quite easily and reliably
with the CONVERT utility that comes with Windows XP. Or you can do it
with a third party utility program such as Partition Magic from Power
Quest.

Using Partition Magic also gives you the ability to realign the
partition so as to avoid the 512 byte cluster situation with NTFS.
