Have tried everything I can think of, deleating WUfolder, no programs
in background, still downloads just fine just takes forever to try to
install even a 323kb file and then "cannot install, tryagain!" took 2
hours trying to install the 323kb update!!

I had the same problem on my IBM NetVista and had upgraded to XP from W2k.
It appears the Configsafe utility prevents the update from creating a
Restore Point and either slows it down (my updates were taking a couple of
hours to install, if they finished at all) or freezes it. I uninstalled it
and the updates are working fine.

What are you running on? My problem's back...it went away for a day. I've
been on the phone with Microsoft now for 4 hours today alone. Can't anyone
troubleshoot this ****?

Go to the troubleshooter page and look for the problem and fix in that list.

Microsoft Windows Update Troubleshooter:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

if thias does not resolve the problem, try downloading the updates to your
hard drive and install them from there. Go to the following website:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp?corporate=true

Click on the "Find updates for Microsoft Windows operating systems" link. On
the following page, scroll down the list and either click on Windows XP RTM
if you haver not yet installed Service Pack 1 or Windows XP SP1 if it is
installed and click the Search button.

On the next page, click Critical Updates and service packs. The page will
display all of the updates for your system. Click the Add button for the
files you wish to download and when you are finished, click on "Go to
download basket". Select the download location and download the files. Go to
the location where you downloaded the files and double click each file to
install.
