View Full Version : XP repair error - stuck on 'Setting COM+ System application as system'

Please help - our PC stopped responding recently, and we're stumped
why. XP boots up, when it reaches the Welcome screen, there are no
options, CTRL+ALT+DEL won't do anything (regardless of how many times
you press it). We took our manufacturers advice and booted from the XP
CD in order to repair windows.
The installation gets to '25 minutes' left, the green progress bar
shows 'Completing installation...' and then - nothing. It doesn't
crash, it just stops installing - the mouse works still, it's just
like it's thinking about something but never gets to it. We've left it
for 5 hours and it hasn't moved. :o(

We're really reluctant to do a clean install of XP, and I'm sure we
shouldn't have to. I've pressed SHIFT + F11 on the installation
screen, and the dialog box status bar (blue bar on grey - standard
windows installation window) is about two thirds complete, and it's
stuck on:

Status: Setting COM+ System Application as system

If anybody out there can help, I'd be really appreciative.
I tried support.microsoft.com's Kb until my fingers were sore, and
when I try and apply for assisted support, it asks me for my Product
ID, telling me how to get it via the Start menu - which is great when
I can't get into Windows. :O(

Any ideas, anyone?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Geoff
