I have the Netgear WGR614 Wireless Router which is
working great so far unfortunately however when I start a
video/voice conversation the other end cannot hear or see
me! I can however see & hear them!

I have tried many different settings on the WGR614 to no
avail! I have enabled UPnp on the WGR614 & port
forwarding (ports 5004 to 65534) still nothing!

I'm not an expert by no means at networking but surely
(hopefuly) there is way to get this working?

Thanks.

Greetings Fernando,

Firstly, make sure you've gone through the Audio (and Video) Tuning Wizard in Messenger. To
do so, open the main Messenger window, click the Tools menu, then Audio Tuning Wizard, then
go through the wizard to select and test your audio/video devices.

Then, verify that the Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall isn't on -- click Start, then
click the Control Panel. If you're in category view click Network and Internet connections
then click Network Connections. Right click your network/internet connection, then click
Properties. Click the Advanced Tab, and verify that the Internet Connection Firewall is
unchecked. As well, if your contact is using some type of third-party firewall (ZoneAlarm,
Norton Internet Security, etc.) have them make sure that Messenger is set to "Permit All",
"Allow All" or "Medium" (ZoneAlarm).

If that's not the case, and since you're using a router (with UPnP support), you may need to
remove the current port forwardings. To do so, click Start, All Programs, Accessories,
Communications, Network Connections. Right-click the "Internet Gateway" (should be under the
Internet Gateway heading) and choose Properties. Choose the Settings button, click each
'msmsgs' or 'msnmsgr' entry and then choose 'Delete' to each one. Then close Messenger
(right-click the Messenger icon, choose Exit), then restart Messenger.

Finally, you might try turning off the QoS Packet Scheduler. To do so, click Start, then
click the Control Panel. If you're in category view click Network and Internet connections
then click Network Connections. Right click your network/internet connection, then click
Properties. Uncheck the QoS Packet Scheduler, then reboot and try again..

Netgear routers (mine is a fr114p) do have some problems/bugs in
firmware-side upnp code. Try MSN 5, my fr114p works flawlessly with MSN 5
(all functions). It does also, except xfer: I am not able to send files to
users who do not use MSN 6. When sending from MSN 6 to someone who also has
MSN 6, xfer is fast and reliable, but I checked Internet Gateway and while
xfer runs, there is no upnp entry there (in MSN 5 I also had an entry).
Look if there is a firmware update for your modell, or send an email to
betabugs@netgear .com, if they could recompile upnp code in firmware ... I
did so, and they promised me, to do so for my modell.

Greetings
Carsten

Fernando,

Did any of this work? I am having the same problem. I
cleared a lot up by deinstalling Norton Internet
Security. Now I connect to the other person outside the
firewall but they can't hear my voice. I can hear theirs
fine. If I connect to another computer behind the wgr614
everthing works fine.

If you haven't had any luck either, then this is probably
a bug but it could be either Netgear or Microsoft. This
is one of those things that might take a long time to
resolve if they both think it is the other guy's fault.

Post a reply and let us know if it still doesn't work. I
talked with Netgear and they "know of no problems". I'll
burn a Microsoft support unit to see if they can figure
it out.
