Why is font so large ?

I just set up my Dell with windows XP. Why is everything so large ? I can only see half a page at a time. I've been all over Control Panel and Display, but cannot seem to find a way to reduce fonts and icon sizes.

Right-click start, properties, start menu tab, customize button, tick small icons.
Right-click your desktop, properties, settings, change the screen resolution to
something like 1024x768 or more.
You can customize your desktop and change fonts sizes under the appearance tab, click
the advanced button.
