View Full Version : Windows Messenger logs me out of MSN Messenger

I have installed MSN Messenger 6 on my Win XP Pro SP1
system and set Windows Messenger not to run. However, MSN
Messenger sometimes tells be I have been signed out
because I have signed in at another location. If I sign
back in with MSN Messenger, a Windows Messenger pop-up
appears from the tray to tell me I have been signed out
of Windows Messenger.

I can no longer access Windows Messenger as it is not in
the tray. How can I stop it trying to sign me in?

Thanks for any help,

Julian Gall

PS. It would be a lot simpler if Microsoft just had one
Messenger that did everything!

Greetings Julian,

Do you have Norton Antivirus 2003 installed? Norton added a new "instant messaging scanning"
feature to Norton Antivirus 2003, which can conflict with Messenger and cause this behavior.
To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in the System
Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click Options, then
Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.

Jonathan,

Thanks for the suggestion but I am not running Norton
2003. I run NOD32 antivirus.

I do now have Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger both in
the tray. Sometimes one signs in, sometimes the other.

I have tried to sign into Windows Messenger with a non-
existant email to see if this makes it "forget" me.

Which one do you want to use? if its MSN then you may like to uninstall
Windows Messenger from the windows components list (I assume you have SP1
installed, this option is unavailable to system that do not have SP1
installed).

Yes, both clients will try to log you in upon connecting to internet
unless:-
1) There is an option in MSN that can be unchecked for MSN to
automatically connect to the internet upon connecting but i guess you like
to use MSN then this may not be workable for you.
2) uncheck the 'remember my password' option, but that would mean you
will have to enter you password everytime you log in to MSN.
3) very simple, just dont let windows messenger sit in the tray, right
click and exit and in case you are into using outlook express and windows
messenger wont let you exit it, just run the famous Jonathan Kay reg file to
disintegerate windows messenger from Outlook express.

Hope this helps.
