View Full Version : Webcam not working in Windows Messenger

My webcam will not work in Windows Messenger 4.7 (and I
am using XP).
The webcam works fine via other software but not via
Messenger.
The error message I get is as follows:
"The camera you selected is not working properly, or may
be in use by another program."
I have no other software open and obviously I have
checked the drivers are properly installed etc (the
webcam is recognised in Device Manager and passes all the
diogostics tests).
I contacted the company I bought the webcam from
(Creative) and they say that the webcam works fine under
old versions of Windows Messenger but it is a known and,
as yet unsolved problem with the latest version, hense
they say to contact Micrsoft!
Can anyone help ... please .... !

Greetings Susan,
You might try looking on Windows Update to see if there's some updated drivers available for
your webcam that will fix this:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com.
(After scanning, choose the Drivers option).
As well, you might try installing this patch (if you don't have Windows XP Service Pack 1
installed):
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=310507
Finally, it is possible that it may just not work (although I haven't heard anything specific
about Creative webcams before).

Microsoft simply BLEW IT. Seems they are trying to corner the market
"so-to-speak" on webcamming functions now. Seems Any webcam will work with
any OTHER webcamming/video applications, BUT when it comes to MESSENGER, you
had better use the cam they say to, or they will give you some lame excuse
as to why it won't work. Never really telling you that they are forcing you
to Upgrade... YET AGAIN... this time your camera. They also BLEW IT when
they took the link to NetMeeting out of Messenger IF they know that ONLY a
limited number of Cameras will work with MESSENGER, and that virtually ALL
cameras will work with NetMeeting, WHY would they do that? hmmmmmmmm.....
Seems to me that the MAC just keeps looking better and better these days.
