View Full Version : qic files to bkf

Maryann
December 31st 03, 05:51 PM
I just spent hours with on-line tech support so that I
could upgrade from Me to Xp. I could not get my backed up
data to convert to XP because the format was wrong.
MSbackup extension is .qic which is not supported by Xp.
Has anyone figured out how to deal with this? The rest of
the install was fine. To not loose everything, I re-
installed Me until I find a better option for my data.
Help!

Maryann,

While NTBackup does not recognize the MSBackup .QIC files, try the =
utility here for that, it has a 30 day free trail. Link courtesy of MVP =
Harry Ohrn:
http://www.stompinc.com/trial/index.phtml?stp

Ntbackup will not recognize the file compression used by Win98's =
msbackup. Download the 30 day trial of Backup MyPC from www.stompinc.com =
will work. Backup MyPC is actually the Veritas Backup Exec app that the =
Windows Backup programs are based on so it will open and restore .QIC =
files.

Maryann,
You will need to purchase the backup software located on the web site to
access the information from your backup files.

I have the same problem, downloaded the 30 day trial version installed it.
Didn't work said that the backup was not made by that program.
Did get this link but haven't had a chance to try it. From Harry Ohrn.
It's long winded but might help http://www.fpns.net/willy/msbackup.htm

Maryann. The 30 day trial ware version of Backup MyPC app from Stompinc used
to restore .QIC files but it appears that they stripped the option out of
the trial. Likely because people were not purchasing it. Take this link for
more information . http://www.cknow.com/ckinfo/acro_q/qic_1.shtml

I did a google search and found that this copy of BackUp MyPC is still being
hosted
http://downloads.zdnet.co.uk/downloads/download/1003-2242-10176011.html It
is a 30 day trialware of 4.85 and should restore .QIC files

I tried installing the msbackup program that was suggested in a previous
post from the dos prompt. It starts to install then says that it has to test
the computer. While doing so it says there is a 16 bit porgram (something
like that) that is trying to access the hard drive don't know if I should
let it continue or not?

There is no guarantee that the Windows 95 version of msbackup will work
however I have tested this one
http://downloads.zdnet.co.uk/downloads/download/1003-2242-10176011.html and
it works for me with .QIC files created under Windows 98 and moved to a
Windows XP system.

This is the one that I tried yesterday after you posted it. I get the
message that it can't find a catolog. When I did the backup it was with Win

Walt check the Help file for Backup MyPC. Look under catalog->import

anyway after you launch Backup MyPC and select the option to Restore. You
should eventually get to a screen that looks like this
http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/images/restore1.jpg
Make certain you have Restore from listed as "File" then click the button
called Device View. Browser to the location of your .QIC file and OK
through. Make certain to change location for "Where to restore". The app
works.

It works. I just set up Windows Me then installed the Backup utility from
the Me CD and created a backup. I transferred it to XP and used Backup MyPC
to open and restore the backup.

Well I tried it again like you explained it. This time I get "media cannot
be read or is not properly formatted" . Maybe when I did the backup I didn't
do something correctly? The program sees the file "mybackup.qic" but can't
read the disk?

Where is the file located? If it is on a CD how did you copy the file to the
media? What software did you use to burn the file to the CD? Have you tried
copying the file to the Hard Drive and then restoring from there? Did you
use a packet formatted CD-R/W to save to. This would be a CD formatted with
a program like Direct CD from roxio (part of Easy CD Creator) or a program
like InCD (comes with Nero). If you used an older version of one of those
apps then XP won't be able to read from the disk.

How large is the file? Is the file part of a spanned set or spilt file? If
so perhaps there is a missing or corrupt component.

Do you have access to a Windows Me system that you can see if you can open
the file on?
