Oh jeez, PLEASE someone help me!

I have Windows XP Home, Windows Messenger 4.7, and MSN 6
I downloaded for the new features. I somehow removed
windows messenger. Then I later found out that MSN 6
requires windows messenger to also be installed for other
features (and I wish this wasn't true, cause I sure don't
require TWO of basically the same IM program). So I
downloaded it again.

However, for the short while when I only had MSN6, except
for the missing features, it ran fine. Now as I
downloaded windows messenger 4.7 again, it is causing
problems.

It auto signs me in to windows messenger when I check
email (but not all the time, but quite often), and quite
often signs me in after I start windows. HOWEVER, both
in Outlook express, and windows messenger, I have set it
to NOT auto log me in ever. Also, when it auto logs me
in like this, there is no little icon that shows up in
the bottom right corner of my screen (where it would be
had I opened it myself). I have no idea what so ever
that I am online in windows messenger, and people IM me
out of the blue. It is often when I am busy (thus my not
opening the program voluntarily).

PLUS, even after I manage to log out (which I have to do
through Outlook Express, since the icon isn't there as I
said), the program is still open. When I open it myself
and sign out, I know that it won't close for sure, cause
when I try to right click on the icon, and close it, it
says other programs are using the service. BUT I HAVE NO
OTHER PROGRAMS OPEN. Windows messenger is also NOT in
the add/remove programs list, and so when I tried to
delete it manually from the HD, it says I can't because
something else is using it - but nothing is!

So, in other words, I need to know how to 'fix'
messenger, because I guess I might need those other
features. But for the most part I don't use them, and
having BOTH windows and MSN messenger on my PC makes
windows msngr log me in without my consent (all the right
choices are unchecked), without my knowledge that I'm
logged in, and without being able to quit the program or
remove it. This is just unacceptable.

If anyone can help me out, please please tell me what to
do. I never know when I am online and going to get IMed
anymore.

Ok, I tried this now. I hope it will work. However, it
would be a good thing to have MSN protected by Norton,
and it isn't MSN messenger I'm worried about, it is
WINDOWS messenger that is causing problems. I am tired
of it logging me on. It did this just now even though I
disabled it. Now I disabled 'MSN messenger' in Norton
Antivirus as well, I guess I will have to wait and see if
this helps or not.

Hi Nadine,

This 'feature' in Norton is actually mislabeled. It *only* integrates with Windows Messenger
(only Windows XP) and will not touch MSN Messenger. Not only that, all this feature does is
automatically scan files when you receive them via Messenger -- 99% of the time you're apt to
execute whatever someone just sent to you, which Norton will scan anyway, regardless if this
'feature' is on or not. It's a convenience 'feature', nothing more.
