View Full Version : SP2 Issue?

I recently applied the latest and greatest patches via automatic update on
my WinXP Home machine. Before applying the updates, my machine was blazing
fast and very usable. Now, after having applied the latest updates, my
machine seems to have serious performance issues. Am I correct to blame
this on SP2 (which piece is the probable culprit?) or is it conceivably
something else?

I updated my virus signatures and scanned the entire system. I also
installed Ad Aware 6 and SpyBot to check for those possibilities -
everything is clean.

Suggestions?

Thanks so much!

Eddie

MS hasn't issued SP-2 yet! Some of the update patches do cause trouble ,
although I have never had a problem , some do. Go to add and remove programs
and remove the latest one that gave you problems and reboot. See if that
brings back your lightning speed. Jym

If you are running a leaked copy then yes you can blame it all you want.
NEVER download any kind of updates from ANYWHERE but Windows Update.

SP2 hasn't been released yet. It isn't scheduled to be released until
2nd Quarter 2004 at last word. The latest version that's available to
us mere mortals is version 1a, and I've no problems on my machine with
that version except for a bit of browser weirdness with IE6 (which is
ok, I can always use Mozilla)

If you've gotten hold of a bootleg of a SP2 beta patch, I'd say that
you basically asked for it. It's one of the risks of installing
pre-release software. Assuming for the moment that you got hold of
SP2 legally, report your problems to the development team so they can
fix it (and curse your name for finding the bug).

So these 20 Hotfixes I have are somehow from somewhere else? Did someone
hack the MS Update site?

I have exactly 20 entries in add/remove programs with the prefix: "Windows
XP Hotfix (SP2) ..." I could itemize them if that helps. I use the
"auto-update" feature where my machine auto-magically downloads updates in
the background and informs me they are ready to be applied. If these are
erroneous, please let me know and ... I guess I'll remove all 20 of them.

Thanks!

Eddie

To all of you who feel the need to scarf addresses off this news group and
send people email that looks like it's from Microsoft: I hope you are
prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. If someone is monitoring this
list and would like a list of the addresses of which I'm speaking, please
email me privately.

I have had no problems with getting spam at this account until I posted on
this news group. I now have about 30 different emails in my inbox which
have infected executables attached.

I never do. I always use the auto-magic updates where it downloads in the
background and then informs me the updates are ready to be applied.

I am a software developer. "Leaking", "pirating", call it what you will, is
not something I participate in :-)

They are pre-SP2 hot fixes. They will be included with SP2 when it is =
due to be released a year from now (see =

really want to wait that long for what you have now?

The "sp" should stand for service pack. The second service hasn't come out
yet. (My hotfixes has the SP -2 also)
Remove the last hotfix prior to having problems. that's the standard fix.
System Restore might work also. Jym
