View Full Version : I hate Windows XP

My computer came loaded with Windows XP, and I absolutely
detest it.

At least 90% of the sound from my old software no longer
functions, and I'm continuously being informed that
XP "Cannot display this video mode". If XP offers ANY
benefits over 95 or 98, I've yet to see them.

I still have both Windows 95 and Windows 98 on CD, and I'd
really like to be shut of this miserable XP once and for
all.

Is there a quick and painless way to just install Windows
98 on my system and overwrite XP or whatever without
losing everything else I have on my hard drive? I know
upgrading is fairly simple, but I guess this is
downgrading (or maybe retrograding).

Any guidance anyone could mail me on this subject would be
much appreciated.

Thanx:

Tom Ponta

Tom;
There is no quick and easy way to downgrade.
ALL the data will be lost unless you dual boot, but then the
applications will not be usable on Windows 9x unless they are
installed to Windows 9x.

Have you tried compatibility Mode for older applications?
Start/All Programs/Accessories/Program Compatibility Mode

Check with the application manufacturers about updates/patches.
Make sure you have the latest Windows XP drivers and all the Critical
Updates as well as any Recommended Updates that may apply.
Start/All Programs/Windows Update

To get to Windows 9x:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314052
Verify the availability of Windows 9x drivers before you start, much
newer hardware is not supported in the older OSs.

Also Windows 98 is past the supported stage in it's lifecycle:

You have to upgrade software periodically no matter what operating system
you are using. There is dos software that won't work on Win 95 or 98. If
this dos software wouldn't run on win 98 would you hate it too? Jym

If you search this newsgroups, you will find a few folks who have asked
the same question with answers provided.

Good luck searching any Microsoft newsgroups. The search
function is very poorly designed and poorly implemented.
Multiple terms in a field are searched using Boolean OR
instead of AND, which means you get many, many irrelevant
hits. I also see server errors returned, etc, and yes, I
have told Microsoft about the problems many times.

Use good tools. Stop wasting time trying to influence Microsoft. (use
a real news group to read and contribute, and use Google to search).
To search microsoft.public.windowsxp.* see
http://groups.google.com/groups?q=microsoft.public.windowsxp&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en&btnG=Google+Search

I found when I installed XP on an existing computer, that the drivers that
XP automatically installed for the sound card and video card didn't *quite*
work. I went to the manufacturer's sites and downloaded drivers for XP, and
since then everything works *much* better.
