View Full Version : Still missing main toolbar

Thanks to all those who have tried to help, but i'm still
mising my windows and internet explorer main toolbar
(file, edit, etc.). It's missing in some folders, and in
special folders such as My Documents I get a white bar
with a windows logo in the middle instead of the main
toolbar. I've tried downloading registry fixes and i've
tried to alter it myself and delete the ITBarLayout value,
but it dosen't appear to be in the
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Toolbar area or any subsections (Explorer,
ShellBrowser or WebBrowser) Maybe that's the problem? I
could access it if I could see the View menu and fiddle
with the toolbar settings, but I can't. Right clicking on
the remaining bars (Webcontrol bar, URL bar, Linksbar
etc). I have managed to unlock the bars by adjusting the
LockToolbars value in the registry, but i can't find the
main bar and it isn't hidden behind any of the remaining
bars. I have tried everything I can think of.
Thanks for any more help you can give.

Put the mouse curser on the end of the toolbar until it change to a two
headed arrow. Then drag to the left or right.

Michael,

The ITBarLayout value not being there won't cause the problem. If its not
there, then Internet Explorer or Explorer, as appropriate, reverts back to
its default settings for the tool/menubars. The setting is recreated when
you make any changes after that. I'm wondering now if a 3rd party toolbar
or toolbar extension is your problem.

Close all open Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer windows. Then in
Regedit, go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar

Right click the Toolbar subkey and select Export. This creates a REG file
that can be re-imported, if need be. Then look in the right pane for
toolbar entries. They will have value names like:

{42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6}
{8E718888-423F-11D2-876E-00A0C9082467}

By default, the only entry here is the
{8E718888-423F-11D2-876E-00A0C9082467} entry. Any others are 3rd party
toolbars. Right click each of the "non default" entries and select Delete,
preferably one at a time. Open one of the Windows you're having problems
with and see if your toolbars are functioning again. If so, you've found
the problem. Toolbar extensions are generally individual buttons that have
been added to the toolbar. These entries are in:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Extensions

Each button is a sub key with a name similar to
{6224f700-cba3-4071-b251-47cb894244cd}. Again, right click on the
Extensions subkey and select Export to create the backup REG file. Then
delete each subkey until you find the one that's causing the problem.

If all of this fails, then you may have to perform a "repair" installation
of Windows. Additionally, don't start a new thread after you've tried
something. We generally track the posts that we respond to, and any
answers, so its easier to keep up with what's going on, and what has/has not
been tried.
