I had aproblem while upgrading 98 to XP. Basically the
installation would keep switching to the welcome screen
when I tried to enter my CD key. Anyway I got some help
in the online help section, but now I have a whole bunch
of i386 files on my C: drive. It looks like hundreds of
these files. So does anyone know if these files are
needed or can I remove them to free up some space on my
computer?

The answer is that it depends.
From what you're describing, you copied the contents of the I386 directory
from CD to HD and ran the installation from HD. If so, then yes, you can
delete the directory as long as you keep the CD handy in case the system has
to retrieve original modules.
However if you did not explicitly copy the I386 directory from CD to HD,
then you have an interesting OEM distro and deleting I386 could be
problematic.
