(it) will restart,
but (it) will not shut down.
(it) is new.
--i have been shutting it down with the surge-protected
power switch.
-- and when it reboots it is OK-- and does not run the xp
version of scandisk--
is this the way xp home ed. works....???

You have problems. First thing is to disable a feature that is enabled by
default even though it only makes sense in a remote server environment.
Doing the power off the way you're doing can cause problems.

Right click "My Computer" and select properties. Go to the advanced tab.
Towards the bottom, hit the settings button in the start and recovery
section. Uncheck the "automatically restart..." option towards the bottom
and apply/OK your way out.

The system will now halt on the fault happening during shutdown rather than
immediately rebooting.

In the mean time, you can look in event viewer (start->run->eventvwr.msc
[enter]) to see what's happening. If you can locate the fault (scroll
through the detail view) you can hit the copy button on the detail log view
then paste the contents back here. Alternatively, once you disable auto
restart on fault, you can simply do a shutdown then write down the full text
of the error message, exactly, then post it back here.

Walter,
thank you for your reply.
i don't know if the following makes a material difference..
but-- for clarificatiion--
when i click on the restart -- it will shut-down-and-
restart.
when i click on the shutdown- it either sits there,- it
does not shut down.
it is not the case that when i click on shutdown it
restarts.
meanwhile-- when i get home i will check the log, etc.- as
you direct.
thanks/ john
