U.S. AOL "Dog Frisbees" have the MS JVM

AOL used to provide people within its service area with enough
floppies so that most people never had to buy them. But then its
progie got large enough so that it had to be distributed on a CD-ROM.
(besides which CD-ROMs are cheaper to distribute than more than maybe
2 or 3 floppies)

Now, if you've been caught by the Microsoft-Sun legal dispute, here's
a new use for the AOL CD-ROM in the the magazine you got or in the
junk mail.

If your AOL CD is in drive D:, look for

D:\AOLTECH\JAVAVM.EXE

The file is dated 6/10/2002 at 0545 so you may still want to run
Windows Update to get a later version with at least some bugs fixed.
(and new ones...well...)

Once you have SOME version of the MSJVM Microsoft can give you
updates.

Hmm - it also seems to have some version or other of Radio@AOL (an add
on for RealAudio which gives you their stations) and Winamp.

One odd thing - since they own Netscape why don't they give you
Netscape as an alternative browser? Has AOL/Time Warner well and truly
given up on Netscape? In the meantime they have the Mozilla people
building an open source version of Netscape. Towards what end?

Actually, I was told that AOL 8 uses Netscape 7's engine for its built-in
browser....

Yeah, but that would be a wasted 37 cents. AOL says they are welcoming this
"No More CD" project because they can then recycle the CD's. If AOL paid me
for every CD I returned to them then I would be dumpster diving for those
puppies! Sort of like people that collect pop cans to get the deposit back.

Believe me I am no fan of IE, as it has its problems.

However, Netscape sucks, well and truly. I just installed Netscape 7,
making sure to choose custom, and making sure to tell it to NOT
INSTALL ALL THE CRAPPY **** IT WANTED TO INSTALL including AOHell,
Real Player, and about 10 other things.

Guess what? It installed everything, overwriting my existing
programs. It also refused to start, since I prevented it from
"phoning home" with my firewall.

On the other hand, both Opera and IE will at least start and tell you
they could not establish a connection.

When I can afford it, maybe I will install a version of Netsucks on a
separate machine that it can't **** up. Until then, I have to run all
3 on one machine, and use an older, less crappy version of netsucks,
so that I can control what software is on my machine.

Wonder why they are going out of business? I don't.
